As mother of four, Melissa Gutzwiller tends to Alexis and helps the other girls with the bath, 4 year old Gillian (back) proceeds to trap the family cat, Ashley in between the window and the screen. According to Melissa, the key to being a good mother is patience. During the 15 minute bath, Melissa dealt with a trapped cat, having her faced washed by Adrianna, soaked carpet, changing all four girls clothing, all the while bathing Alexis and keeping her cool demeanor and calmly asking Gillian to free Ashley.

Assignment 3- Moment

Looking at the daunting task ahead, expecting parents Bill and Melissa Gutwiller try to remember where the baby swings and car seat are at in the garage rafters. Bill has to get the baby's stuff down so Melissa can clean it. "This is nesting...cleaning or as husbands say crazy," Melissa said. Melissa is expecting newborn, daughter Alexis on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 and to be completely ready and be able to relax the next couple weeks the Gutzwiller's thought it would be best to get as much done as possible on Tuesday, February 23, 2010.

Nesting

On Tuesday, February 23, 2010 expecting parents, Melissa and Bill Gutzwiller finish up the last few preparations before the arrival of their fourth daughter, Alexis. Since Melissa’s due date is Tuesday, March 16, 2010 the Gutzwiller’s thought it
would be best to finish up the remaining loose ends before the two weeks prior to her due date.
Some of the loose ends the Gutzwiller’s had to finish include cleaning stored baby items like swings, a car seat, and toys, completing hospital registration papers, backing the hospital bag, and talking about the possibility of saving Alexis’s cord
blood.
While Melissa packs her bag, she takes a moment to write a list of items she will need during her stay at the hospital. As she writes out her list, she remembers one last item, “I need my makeup,” Melissa said. She added she still wants to look
good while she has visitors at the hospital.
As the afternoon went on, Melissa asks Bill to take down the stored baby items from the garage so she can clean them. “This is nesting…cleaning or as husbands say crazy,” Melissa said.
Towards the end of the afternoon, the Gutzwiller’s accomplished several things during the day, making themselves and their home completely ready for the arrival of Alexis. Melissa added all they need to be finished is Alexis.

Preparation

Expecting mother, Melissa Gutzwiller, thinks about what else she needs to take for the delivery of her newborn, daughter Alexis. Both being avid sculptural art fans, they thought attending the “Winter Garden
Glass,” exhibit at Midland’s Dow Gardens would be a great way to see some unique
sculptural art.
“I really like bright sculptures, especially glass,” Sergio said. “It’s (the exhibit)
some thing cool to do,” Sergio said. While sitting outside her apartmen, Nichol makes a hand puppet bird.

For this photo, I wanted to make this portrait as dusk to get the colorful sky in the background because our living room faces toward the west. So I tried to shoot at 6:00 pm, however, the light wasn't strong enough to make the shadow, come through the shades and make the silhouette. So I had to I had to but a backlight on him to make this possible. Zac Nichol wanted to make his photography him, but not really be able to really see him. So we made the shadow and used the slatted shades as a way to distort his figure. Pleasant, Nichol was introduced to all of Dziurka’s roommates, who include Dessie Tzankova, Jenny Jordan, and myself.
As a unspoken rule of our apartment, if you come in, you are subject to
becoming either a model for Dziurka’s art projects because she is an art major with a printmaking concentration or you are a subject for one of my photojournalism projects.
As it turns out, Nichol turned into the subject for my lighting assignment. When I asked Nichol what kind of portrait he wanted, he suggested something that would show him but not really show him. So my first inclination was to make a
shadowed silhouette.
While creating this portrait I asked him to just be himself and he began making shadow puppets. He tried a few animals and then decided on making a flying bird. In the short session, he said he had fun and never expected to be a photography subject while on his first trip to Mt. Last year at this time, I produced a four chaptered multimedia piece on an alternative birthing process called an at home lotus birth. However, with this project I want to focus on the hospital setting, I want this project to look at birth from a more common way of birth. I want this to be the opposite of my previous piece on birth. In general, I want to photograph a family who is about to have a baby, take a look at birth from the perspective of a newborn, get a sense of the emotions siblings and extended family have from the new baby, and look at birth from the perspective of a doctor.

Topic
I will be photographing birth from several perspectives with the intention of combining all these perspectives by a common thread of birth. I want to explore the emotions and contributions the baby, parents, sibling, extended family, and doctors all have during the birth process. My inspiration for this project is The Leaning Channel’s (TLC) birth documentation shows, “Birth Day” and “A Baby Story.” These two shows are basically the format I want to accomplish, following a family and doctor through the birth process.

Action
There are five groups of people I would like to address with this project; the newborn baby, the parents, the siblings, the extended family, and the doctor.

A. The Newborn Baby
1. Look at life from the perspective of a newborn.
a. What are the first moments of life like?
b. What type of challenges, if any are there for this child?
c. Look for specific first- introduction to mother and father,
Footprints, etc.
2. With this section I want to pay special attention to sensory responses.
a. I want to capture the sounds of the delivery room, pay
close attention to light (is it bright or low light),
b. I really want portray the initial environment the baby is
brought into.
c. I want to explore touch and smell though, expressions and sounds the baby makes- examples like the touch of the
mother, or the softness of the newborn skin.
d. If possible incorporate ultrasound images and the sound of the sound of the ultrasound
e. If the newborn has medical issues that require time in the
NICU, explore what the baby goes through there.
f. Another possible avenue would be to follow the baby through
life for the next three months (approximately).
3. I feel as if this is going to be very subjective and stylistic.

B. The Parents
1. Look at birth from the perspective of the mother
a. Basically, I want to show it all, specifically I would like to show people living life as they do everyday, I want to show the truthfulness that ordinary people can portray. Here are some of the photographers and photographs that I find inspiring.

MATTHEW McDERMOTT-( http://mcdermottphotos.com/ ). -_A photographer that I recently discovered for his work in Haiti is Matthew McDermott. I found out about McDermott’s work from watching a CNN report about a photographer who took the “Ten Mile Wide Smile (http://www.life.com/image/first/in-gallery/38642/the-weeks-best-photos-11710 ).” I also found out that he took photos of the World Trade Center attacks. I like his work because he tries to find beautiful moments in horrible situations.

AMI VITALE ( http://www.amivitale.com/ )- Ami Vitale is a photographer who makes photos all around the world, some of her world comes from places like India, Kashmir, and Guinea-Bissau. Vitale inspires me because she looks at other cultures around the world and explores what is everyday life for them.

LEONARD FREED- Freed focused on the streets, several of his photographs are of police officers in action, people being arrested, and crime. He’s a photographer who I find inspiring because he doesn’t show the happy moments of life, He shows the harder side of a side of life that a lot of people don’t get to see.

ERICH HARTMANN- Another photographer, who I find inspiring is Hartman, he also photographed the simpler parts of life, often looking into farm life and the intimate moments these people have in their day to day lives.

Some photographs I like:
“Migrant Mother,”- Dorothea Lange, March 1936
http://www.masters-of-photography.com/images/full/lange/lange_migrant_mother.jpg

“Boy With Toy Hand Grenade,”- Diane Arbus, 1962
http://iconicphotos.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/diane_arbus_child_toy_hand.jpg

“Execution in Saigon,” Eddie Adams, February 1, 1968
http://vlitab.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/eddie-adams_execution.jpg

“Massacre in Beijing,” Jeff Widener, June 5, 1989
http://hornbillunleashed.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/tiananmen.jpg

“Hand,” Mike Wells, October 1980
http://northcoastcafe.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/black_hand.JPG

“Jeanne Crain,” Peter Stackpole, September 30, 1946
http://images.google.com/hosted/life/l?imgurl=e83614691db13389&q=jeanne%20crain%20peter%20stackpole&prev=/images%3Fq%3Djeanne%2Bcrain%2Bpeter%2Bstackpole%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den-us%26um%3D1

“Drum Major,” Alfred Eisenstaedt, October 30, 1950
http://www.nocaptionneeded.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/drum-major-eisenstaedt.jpeg

“3-D Movies,” J.R. Become more proficient in lighting.
-Gain more confidence with my flash
-Shoot an assignment that forces me to do an on location lighting setup -Learn fill flash.

2. Shoot more sports.
-I’m comfortable shooting softball and baseball, so stay away from those.
-Become a better shooter in low light, high action sports.
-Make sharp sports photos more consistently.

3. Work on composition
-Become more aware of different shooting angles.
-Don’t shoot straight on if I don’t have to.
-Shoot more detail shots and actively look for them.

4. Stop focusing so much on the “moment.”
-I’ve been told I’m a moment shooter, look for the moment but also shoot the
before and after.
-I’m too focused on the moment, so I need to look for more compositionally
interesting photos.

5. Become better at editing photos, for color correction, toning, and cropping.

6. I
want to begin at a smaller newspaper that will allow me to gain and work on my
skills as a photographer. I would like this internship to be at a newspaper that is
about the size of The Bay City Times.
After my time as an intern, I would like to be a staff photographer a
somewhat of a larger newspaper, where I can again focus on community-based
news. I would like to think of myself as someone for an eye for moments and
Someone who specializes in human-interest stories, so I would also like the future
newspaper I work at to allow me to make in depth photo stories.
One of my main goals that I would like to accomplish during my career is
producing a long-term project on animals, specifically wildlife preservation. Another
project would be about someone who is struggling with a life changing event. This
event could either be a life threatening illness, a family with one parent in the
military and their daily lives.
I also want to create a book someday that is somewhat like the America 24/7
book, but make it more localized to a specific region or state. My book might be
more about living in Michigan or a book that specializes in all things that make
Michigan, Michigan. It might focus on small towns, bigger cities, the lakes, and the
people. I would also like to focus on the farming and agricultural aspects of
Michigan.

JRN 521- Inspirations

Things and People That/ Who Inspire Me or Things I Like In General:
Green Technology
Animals (People’s Pets, Wildlife)
Local Community-Based News
Anderson Cooper
Tom Brokaw
Charles Osgood
Annie Leibovitz- imagery and attention to background details
Helmut Newton-for layering
Jacob Riis- historical relevance
Matthew McDermott- recent find, work in Haiti
The Arts- painting, sculpture, art history, installation art
The season of Fall
Farm Life/ Country Living
Hispanic Culture/Food
Hockey
People who aspire to greatness despite personal challenges.

Additional Portfolio Portrait

F-Stop:11 Shutter Speed: 1/200, ISO: 200

Caption: Bellevue, Mich. Pleasant on Tuesday, October 13, 2009. "I've been playing since the sixth grade, but began playing seriously again over the past year," Weiner said. Weiner added he usually only plays in the Detroit area but is traveling around to try new areas. Earlier in the day Weiner said he went to the local Salvation Army to get "dressed up" to play Mt. Pleasant. "I got this suite for $6, I usually don't look this good," Weiner said.

Explanation: I get the strobe up to the left of him and used the reflector on the warm gold side to cast and imitate the natural sunset that was happening. I had the strobe at half power. I was riding around downtown Mt. pleasant looking for an environmental shot and decided to shoot Weiner playing because I thought shooting a street preformer would be a sweet portrait photo.

Location Lighting Practice: Photo by Krista Tacey

This photo was taken in a window on the second floor of Warner Hall. in my our living room. While Whitney stood as if she were stomping a puddle of water I used a strobe to highlight her. Then I took a pole with blue Christmas lights stung across it and had my roommate Jenny turn on and off the lights to make the raindrops as I started from the top of the frame going to the bottom. Then I took a white flashlight to paint in the water puddle. My camera was set and bulb and the entire process took about 67 seconds.

Untouchable Teddy Bear

I made this teddy bear from a gallon sized pickle jar and five light bulbs. I flashed the bear with a red strobe, then lit the orange Christmas lights that are inside the bear for about one second to get the glow inside the bear. Then I painted the face and arms with a white flashlight and also did some swirls with the flashlight also. The entire process took 10 seconds.

<img width='1' height='1' The main focus for this continuation will not be about his everyday life, but focus more on Lajiness as a musician. What makes Lajiness a unique musician is the fact the he plays the guitar, drums, and piano with one arm, while the other is only developed three inches below his elbow. The viewer will see from Lajiness' demeanor that he doesn't let his disability get in his way from doing what he loves, playing and producing music.
I am anticipating this three chaptered video story to be eight minutes, each chapter being about two and a half minutes long. For the first chapter, my plan is to interview Lajiness about the current tour he and his band are on as they make a stop in Bay City, MI at Indian Barry's Bar. During the interview, I plan to ask him questions like how the tour is going, where they have been, what it's like to be on tour, what about his disability makes being on tour difficult. I also plan to ask him how people who have never seen him play react to the fact that he plays with one arm. From this chapter, I want my viewer to see that Lajiness is a dedicated musician who doesn't let other people's reaction to his disability get in this way. I'm also sure Lajiness will say that his disbility doesn't hinder him in any way while he is on tour. From my previous session with him, he said he adapts to his environment well, so being on tour shouldn't be a problem for him.

In the second chapter of my video story, I want to get more personal with Lajiness and show my viewer exactly how Lajiness plays the guitar. There is a process that Lajiness has to perform before he plays the guitar. My first question for Lajiness when I met him was "How do you play without a pick?" I felt foolish after he told me, but basically he takes a pick, bends it in three places and then tapes the pick to his arm. I want Lajiness to show the process of getting his strumming arm ready. This part of the story will show how Lajiness has adapted his playing technique to be able to play the guitar. Visually, it will be medium and tight shots of Lajiness demonstrating the preparation process. I will at this time ask him, if the way he plays distorts the sounds of his guitar and how the way he plays differs from other guitarists.

For the third chapter I will be capturing Lajiness and he rest of The 2nd System as they perform at Indian Barry's Bar on Saturday, February 28. At this time I plan to capture Lajiness setting up the band's equipment and playing their show. My main goal for this part of the story is to get crowd reaction shots, tight shots of Lajiness playing the guitar, and wide environmental shots. I think visually this will definitely be the most appealing part of the story. Basically, it will be the full smoky bar with lighting, energy, and explosive rock. In this chapter, my goal is to showcase Lajiness and The 2nd System to show that their band can compete with any other metal band. I want to show that just because Lajiness has a disability he still can play the guitar with the best of them. I also want to show the rest of the band and how good they are as a group.

When I first met Lajiness over this past winter break I was impressed with how he carries himself and didn't let people get under his skin about his disability. Overall, Lajiness is one of the most positive people I have ever met. He is very knowledgeable about several aspects like playing several instruments and also musical production. I feel that Lajiness has a very inspirational story and he doesn't let his disability get in his way. He says that his disability has made him a better person and he couldn't imagine his life being any different. He also wants other people with disabilities to see through him that their disability should not be an excuse for them not to try new things or stop them from doing what they love. I've seen people with disabilities who have the complete opposite view on like other than what Lajiness has and I want to showcase the accomplishments he and his band The 2nd System have obtained.

<img width='1' height='1'
